Sausalito has a new plaza in front of the Bank of America building in downtown Sausalito. The new "Praça de Cascais" is a tribute to Sausalito's Portuguese heritage and will feature a calçada pavement mosaic that is a gift from Cascais, Portugal, one of Sausalito's sister cities.
Sausalito-Cascais Sister City representatives, project patrons, and local civic leaders had a short groundbreaking ceremony for the new plaza at noon on Monday, April 2.
In May, a calceteiro (calçada artisan) arrived from Portugal and began work on a decorative pavement mosaic with a compass rose design. The compass rose symbolizes the maritime traditions of our two waterfront communities, Sausalito and Cascais.
A dedication ceremony for the new plaza is planned for June 13th, with special guests that include the prime minister of Portugal, the mayor of Cascais, and other Portuguese dignitaries.
The Praça de Cascais has been generously funded by grants, in-kind donations, and private contributions. Visit the project website for more information and photos, and to learn how your family or business can be commemorated on a bronze plaque in the plaza.
